Welcome to American Legion Post 703

Together, members of The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of The American Legion and the The American Legion Riders make up what is known as The Legion Family. All these organizations place high importance on preserving our American traditions and values, improving the quality of life for our nation’s children, caring for veterans and their families, and perhaps most importantly, teaching the fundamentals of good citizenship.

In view of the current Shutdown Post 703 is temporarily extending last year’s season Slip n Ramp Access as follows:
1. Cost for slips is still $600 for members, n $800 for non members.
2. If you had a slip last year you can go ahead and use the same slip for now. But you must notify the Post of intent, name of owner n boat, slip used and proof of last year rental.. The same applies for Ramp Passes.
Please call: (847) 587-2323 or mail in your requested info to the Post during this time Attn: Boat Slip/Ramp Access.
This will help us ensure that proper accountability and access is granted.
As soon as We are allowed to resume operations you can obtain your 2020 Slip and or Ramp Access Tags.
Thank you for your cooperation and support during this crisis.
Just recd this notification. As your Service Officer I have constantly talked about getting registered, update or followed up with your VA claim. Here is yet another golden opportunity for you to have your voice heard in regards to questions regarding claims and or benefits.

KIA from WW II coming home – TSgt Harry A Carlsen

Dear Veterans and Friends:

After 75 years, USMC TSgt Harry A Carlsen is coming home.

USMC TSgt Harry “Bud” Carlsen served in the United State Marines during World War II as the Quartermaster Maintenance Chief for Company A of the 2nd Marine Divisions’ 2nd Amphibious Tractor Battalion. From August through December of 1942, he participated in landing assaults against several strongly defended enemy positions in the South Pacific including Tulagi, Gavutu, Tanambogo, Florida, and Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands.
In November of 1943, he was among the first troops to assault the heavily fortified enemy defenses of Betio Island Red Beach One, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands as part of an advance team whose mission was to establish a headquarters for tractor battalion operations.
TSgt Carlsen was Killed in Action on November 20, 1943.  He was 31 years old.  Bud was one of 550 Marines killed in the battle whose remains were not identified. Dog tags were removed, gravesites obliterated, and records lost.
In 1946 his unidentified remains were moved to Hawaii’s Schofield Mausoleum. 1949 his remains were reinterred at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Hawaii’s Punchbowl in grave E1212.
Due to extensive research by William Niven, Rick Stone (Chief Rick Stone and Family Foundation), and Mark Noah (History Flight), the search for Bud focused on grave E1212.  Work by Nancy Spellman, Bud’s niece, and great nephew Ed Spellman, led to the exhumation of E1212 and the conclusive identification of Bud in June 2018.
TSgt Carlsen’s family chose Glueckert Funeral Home in Arlington Heights for his services.   Information about arrangements can be found at www.glueckertfh.com
Our deepest thanks goes to the family of TSgt Carlsen for his service and sacrifice for our Nation.
TSgt Carlsen’s remains will arrive at O’Hare Airport on Delta Airlines Flight 2573 from Salt Lake at 1:33 pm on Wednesday, October 10, 2018.
A procession to Glueckert Funeral Home will depart O’Hare at ~2:30 pm escorted by the Patriot Guard and a USMC escort.  The procession will travel through Bensenville, Elk Grove Village, Mt Prospect and Arlington Hts.  Please be patient as there may be delays for the flight.
The route will be:
North on York Road / Elmhurst Road to Algonquin Road
West on Algonquin Road to Arlington Hts Road
North on Arlington Hts Road to Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Rd, Arl Hts, IL
EVERYONE is invited to stand along the route to honor this Fallen Hero.  If possible, stand with an American Flag.
Also, veterans and friends are asked to form a Flag Line at Glueckert Funeral Home.
Please take some time from your busy day to honor one of our Nation’s Fallen Heroes.
Greg Padovani
Chairman, Veterans Memorial Committee of Arlington Heights
Honoring the service and sacrifice of our veterans and their families.
